A young forward has surpassed a record set five years ago by the Real Madrid ace.
Jude Bellingham has become one of world football's biggest stars since progressing through the academy ranks at Birmingham City, but the Real Madrid sensation has seen a Blues' record of his now smashed.
The 22-year-old has risen to stardom in rapid fashion since being handed his professional debut by Pep Clotet in an EFL Cup defeat to Portsmouth in August 2019, where the playmaker would become Blues' youngest-ever player at the age of just 16 years and 38 days of age, surpassing the previous record set by the club's all-time great, Trevor Francis.
There is significant hope that, in the years to come, Birmingham are able to retain their top talent in an era which will see all club bases moved to the upcoming £3bn 'Sports Quarter' complex, just a stone's throw away from the club's spiritual and current home of St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park.
And, they could have yet another extremely intellectual talent, as well as a star on the pitch on their hands, with a Blues prospect narrowly defeating the aforementioned Three Lions star to a proud record.
Thursday morning saw millions across the country receiving their GCSE results, with some on the books at Blues also doing so.
Young forward Michael Campbell signed a scholarship with the Second City outfit six months ago, and it was revealed by the club academy's official X account that the young forward had become the best-performing player associated with the academy when it came to their GCSE results, achieving eight Grade 9's and one Grade 8, which surpassed the record previously set by Bellingham in 2020.
A post on X read: "A huge well done to forward Michael Campbell on receiving eight 9s and one 8 in his GCSEs! His results are the best in Blues Academy history, narrowly beating Jude Bellingham's (sorry Jude!)."
The aforementioned Bellingham, who is now seen as a major inspiration to those progressing through Birmingham's academy, saw his shirt number - 22 - retired after the conclusion of his breakthrough season at St Andrew's @ Knighthead Park, in which he racked up a total of 44 senior appearances, scoring four times and registering a further two assists.
This led to a £30m move to Borussia Dortmund at a time when he balanced the infancy of his footballing career with studies, which included a BTEC in Sport and Performance at Loughborough College prior to his move across the continent.
Not many can say they have ended a record set by a Real Madrid star worth over €100m, and it is a moment Campbell is likely to never forget as he continues to look to progress through the youth setup at Birmingham.
The club have a strong record of late when it comes to developing high-profile talents, with Jobe Bellingham following in Jude's footsteps with a summer move to the Signal Iduna Park, whilst the club also banked in excess of £8m for Jordan James as 'pure profit' following the midfielder's move to Rennes last summer.
Campbell will also be inspired by Jay Stansfield's exploits as a young forward in Royal Blue, with the England Under-21 international continuing to handle the immense pressure placed on his shoulders as a result of his multi-million club-record permanent transfer from Fulham in August 2024.
