Chelsea won’t be signing a defender to replace Levi Colwill and are happy with the defensive depth at the club according to The Athletic journalist Liam Twomey.

The Blues were rocked last week by the news Colwill would miss the majority of the season with an ACL injury suffered in the first training session of pre-season.

Colwill had established himself as a key member of the team, with the England international vital to how the Blues play.

Chelsea won’t be signing a replacement for Colwill

Talk has now centred around whether Chelsea need to enter the market in the final weeks in order to sign a replacement.

There were links to Marc Guehi earlier this summer, whilst reports of interest in Piero Hincapie are said to be wide of the mark.

Chelsea have a number of centre backs on their books, with it looking likely Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo will have an even more important role to play this season.

Benoit Badiashile and Wesley Fofana are other options, but the French duo have shown they’ve been unable to stay fit for a consistent period of time.

Youngster Josh Acheampong is highly rated, and could see himself given more opportunities, and there seems to be a divide between supporters on whether a new defender is needed.

However, Twomey has stated in a Q & A with The Athletic that Chelsea are actually happy with their current defensive depth.

He said:

“Chelsea will not be signing a defender to replace Colwill and are happy with the defensive depth they have amassed.”

Chelsea looking to sell Veiga and Disasi

Whilst it appears the Blues are happy with their current options, two defenders who won’t be playing a part next season are Axel Disasi and Renato Veiga.

The duo are among a number of players Chelsea are looking to sell before the end of the window, and they are both attracting interest.

Wolves are said to have made a formal approach for Disasi, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Aston Villa.

Veiga is attracting interest from Saudi Arabia, whilst Borussia Dortmund are reportedly considering a move for the 22-year-old, who’s said to be valued at €40m.
