The ACN Match Review – Cardiff (h)

How did we play?
We played very well in patches, aided by a Cardiff team who seemed determined to allow us to do our lap of honour from minute one, and a goalkeeper who couldn’t be arsed to dive for shots. How they were allowed to score two goals with only ten men for most of the match should be the focus of this performance, not the love-in that suddenly seems to have erupted for a team that’s done fuck-all for three months.
What was the best bit of the game?
The genuine appreciation for Angus Gunn throughout the game and after the final whistle. He is a good goalkeeper and a player who, despite what goes on around him, conducts himself with dignity.
What was the worst bit of the game?
The concession of a penalty to give Cardiff their first goal was indicative of Norwich City this season and many before it. Needless, poorly defended, badly timed. Cardiff were never going to launch a comeback but this gave them plenty of impetus and was us in a nutshell.
What was the atmosphere like?
Exactly as you’d expect a sunny last-day-of-the-season atmosphere. Sacked the struggling manager with two games to go so no one boos on the last day? Check. Best players put on a good show before they bugger off to better opportunities? Check. Release a couple of legends so we can all get a bit teary eyed? Check. It had all the ingredients and we lapped it up.
Hero of the match
Welcome back Amankwah Forson, you were excellent in this match and looked like you cared. You also showed some lovely touches and playing in that advanced right midfield/attack role reminded me of the great Marco Stieperman with your ability to play one touch passes into the striker or cut across the defence to shoot. You also brought dynamism to the midfield, which has been missing for around four years. Please can we have more next season?
