Across Manchester City’s recent poor run of form, Kyle Walker has become a target for criticism. His performances haven’t met the high standards he has displayed throughout his trophy-laden career at the club. That has more to do with age and a heavy workload finally catching up to Manchester City’s captain. But following last night’s match the criticism of Walker has morphed into something else entirely. It’s disgusting and, frankly, has gone too far.
Manchester City and Kyle Walker were forced to issue a statement after City’s captain was the target of racist abuse online. Walker shared the post via his official X account. The world champions issued a statement on X and on their official website. City’s statement can be seen below.
There is a difference between criticising a player’serformance and that becoming personal abuse. When it escalates into racial abuse then it has gone way too far. Football is a passionate game but there is no room for racism in football or in any walk of life. That shouldn’t be forgotten.
It must be said that Kyle Walker will go down as an all-time great at Manchester City. He has been one of the most consistent performers throughout Manchester City’s recent era of dominance. Without him Pep Guardiola’s side may not have scaled the heights they have in recent years. His legacy is secured at Manchester City. That is an inescapable fact and one that should be remembered.
The criticism of Kyle Walker has now morphed into something else entirely. That is sad to see and it has no place at Manchester City or the game or life in general.
