The mood at Estadi Olimpic de Lluis Companys on Sunday evening was purely euphoric as Barcelona were still in the hangover of their league title celebrations from the previous days.

Villarreal, the visitors on the night, meanwhile, arrived with far more focus as they eyes a place in the UEFA Champions League next season and required just one point to do so.

The Yellow Submarines scored early on the night and it was Lamine Yamal who equalised the score for them later in the half before Fermin Lopez made it 2-1 just before half-time.

Two goals from Marcelino’s men after the break made it 3-2 for the visitors and Barcelona found themselves a goal down with just ten minutes to play. This time, however, no comeback materialised.

Barça Universal brings you the player ratings from Barcelona 2-3 Villarreal.

The German goalkeeper started for Barcelona against the same team he went down injured earlier this season but did not have a performance to remember.

Made himself very small in Villarreal’s first goal and made a saveable shot look unstoppable. Once again looked frozen at the visitors’ second goal on the night.

Gerard Martin: 6.5

Gerard Martin started and played the opening half for Barcelona and looked relatively stable in defence during his time on the field.

Made very minimal contributions in the final third and made a couple of errors with his distribution but got the job done. Needless to say, the flank sprung to life after the introduction of Alejandro Balde.

Inigo Martinez: 7

The recently-turned 34-year-old was relatively solid in defence although the high defensive line was breached quite comfortably on the night.

Did well in the buildup and with his interceptions but looked slightly winded when defending quick transitions.

Pau Cubarsi: 7

Cubarsi did not have a very busy night as a whole but was often called into footraces to stop Villarreal’s rampant counter attacks. Was secure as ever with his distribution and can not be directly blamed for either of the goals conceded.

Eric Garcia: 8

Garcia has been taking significant strides improving as a right-back in recent games and the game against Villarreal was one of his best performances in the position.

Looked comfortable playing with Lamine Yamal on the flank, attempted to make inverting runs as well and also looked comfortable in the defensive aspect of his duties.

Pedri: 8.5

Pedri was silky smooth as ever and did not look bothered one bit by Villarreal’s pressure in midfield, contributing both in attack and in terms of neutralising the visitors’s threat.

Casually glided his way past the Yellow Submarines in the first half, was safe as ever in possession and regularly pushed forward to help crack open the defence.

Gavi: 7.5

Gavi made a rare start against Marcelino’s men and formed part of the team’s double pivot throughout the game.

Paired with Pedri in the first half and Frenkie de Jong in the second period, looked comfortable with both superstars.

For his part, Gavi often pushed up in attack but was predominantly a protective unit in midfield to cut off counter-attacks.

Fermin Lopez: 9

The La Masia starlet was persistently Barcelona’s most attacking player on the night and constantly looked to threaten Villarreal’s goal.

Had multiple chances through the first half to open the scoring for the team but was unfortunately denied by some brilliant saves.

Finally had his flowers in the final action of the first-half as he scored Barcelona’s second goal on the night and helped the team take the transient lead at Monjtuic.

Lamine Yamal: 9

The 17-year-old is the best player on the planet at the moment and it is now no longer even a debate.

Yamal continued to be absolutely unstoppable in Barcelona’s game at Montjuic last night and controlled the team’s attacking output as the creator-in-chief.

He opened the scoring for the team on the night with a wonderful strike reminiscent of his golazo against Espanyol midweek.

Raphinha: 7.5

The Brazilian was not at his lethal goalscoring best but was crucial with his movements, contributions in the buildup and movements off the ball.

Combined better in the final third after Alejandro Balde was brought on and looked very comfortable with his distributions. However, he just did not quite get the space to run into an attack.

Robert Lewandowski: 6

The Polish striker entered the field with the singular goal of catching up with Kylian Mbappe on the Pichichi front but did not quite make any progress.

Lewandowski looked rusty, and understandably so given his relatively long period out. His first touches were often loose and he never got into a seriously threatening goalscoring position.
