Roma and Italy midfielder Lorenzo Pellegrini is expected to be out of action for circa four months, confirmed the surgeon who performed the operation.

The player was diagnosed with a torn tendon in his thigh after sustaining the injury during a training session and went under the knife in Finland on Saturday.

There was some confusion over the length of the absence, because the details given in the official Roma statement were extremely sparse.

Depending on the type of surgery, Pellegrini could’ve been out of action for four months or closer to nine, so experts hedged their bets waiting for further details.

Those have now arrived, as Professor Lasse Lempainen spoke directly to Helsingin Sanomat in Finland about the situation.

“It was a lesion of the tendon that required surgery, it went very well, and Pellegrini will be able to start rehabilitation in Rome very soon,” said Professor Lempainen.

“I estimate that he will be able to return to the top level in about four months.”

The specialist has a clinic in Turku and his previous patients include Ousmane Dembele, Nordi Mukiele, Nuno Mendes, Sergi Roberto and Ronald Araujo.

This means Pellegrini will miss the start of next season, but his return to the field is expected to be at roughly the same time as teammate Paulo Dybala, who also had delicate surgery on a tendon tear.
