Supreme Court rejects Matheus Fernandes’s final appeal against Barcelona | OneFootball

Various financial complications have negatively impacted FC Barcelona in recent years. The Catalan giants, despite all the money that they still generate, are a club riddled with various kinds of limitations. Mostly stemming from their mismanagement of resources in the past, Barcelona are now simply paying the consequences.

However, while most of their issues have come out of the fact that they have spent haphazardly on players that should not have been brought in, there has been other complications as well. Beyond just the transfer fees for some players, others have created issues that are not that straightforward to solve.

One such case can be attributed to that of Brazilian player Matheus Fernandes. Having sued Barcelona back in 2021 for ‘unfair dismissal’, his initial claim was to have the club pay him €14.8 million as compensation that he believed to fair for what he went through.

Unfortunately for him, it seems that the reality of the matter will be quite different from what he had hoped for. As highlighted by Mundo Deportivo, the player’s final appeal has now also been rejected and the Supreme Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) has set the compensation at a much lower price than what he was expecting.

According to MD, that compensation now stands at €731,000. That is the price that Barcelona will have to play to their former player according to the findings and as per the decision of the court. This price was already set back in September of 2023, but the player’s lawyers subsequently filed a cassation appeal that has now also been rejected.

Originally, the Brazilian midfielder signed for Barcelona in 2020 when he arrived for €7 million. Not too long after that, he was loaned out to another La Liga side before having his contract be unilaterally terminated, with the club even stating that he lacks “the physical, technical, and attitudinal level required to be part of the squad”.

Ever since then, his career has been rather disappointing for a player that had the chance to represent Barcelona at one point. Now back in Brazil, he currently plays his football for RB Bragantino and does not start as a regular there either.
