Sunderland return to the Stadium of Light on Saturday, aiming to halt a concerning slide, while visitors Brentford arrive full of confidence after turning their own season around.
After a dream start to their top-flight return, Sunderland have suffered consecutive defeats in the league and the Carabao Cup. In contrast, Brentford have recorded back-to-back victories and are looking to build momentum.
This is the first Premier League meeting between the clubs and the 940th different fixture in the competition’s history. History favours the visitors; Sunderland are winless in their last five meetings with Brentford, while the Bees have won their last eight Premier League matches against newly-promoted sides.
Régis Le Bris is contending with a defensive injury crisis. Daniel Ballard has been ruled out until after the international break with a groin injury, joining a lengthy list of absentees that includes Dennis Cirkin and Luke O’Nien. New signing Nordi Mukiele is expected to make his Premier League debut.
Keith Andrews also has a number of fitness concerns. Frank Onyeka is a doubt after picking up a knock in midweek, and he joins Vitaly Janelt, Gustavo Nunes, and Paris Maghoma on the list of concerns. However, captain Nathan Collins has returned to bolster the defence. Wantaway striker Yoane Wissa will not be involved.
After a stunning 3-0 win over West Ham to open the season, Sunderland have been brought back down to earth. A 2-0 league defeat at Burnley was followed by a midweek Carabao Cup exit on penalties to Huddersfield Town. The Black Cats have lost four of their last five competitive matches at the Stadium of Light.
After an opening-day loss, Brentford have hit their stride with two impressive victories. A solid 1-0 league win over Aston Villa was followed by a comfortable 2-0 Carabao Cup win at Bournemouth. The Bees will be confident of extending their superb eight-match winning streak against newly-promoted teams.
Sunderland predicted XI: Roefs; Mukiele, Seelt, Alderete, Reinildo; Diarra, Xhaka, Sadiki; Talbi, Mayenda, Adingra.
Brentford predicted XI: Kelleher; Kayode, Collins, van den Berg, Lewis-Potter; Henderson, Yarmolyuk; Ouattara, Damsgaard, Schade; Thiago.
Due to the 3pm Saturday blackout, the match will not be broadcast live in the UK. Highlights will be available on BBC’s Match of the Day.
