Sunderland have taken unusual steps to limit one of Coventry City’s most effective attacking weapons ahead of their crunch play-off clash.
Ahead of Tuesday night’s Championship play-off semi-final second leg, the Black Cats have reportedly moved the advertising hoardings at the Stadium of Light closer to the pitch.
The idea behind the tweak is to restrict Coventry full-back Milan van Ewijk’s ability to launch his trademark long throws, which have caused real problems for opposition defences this season.
The boards have been brought in by around two metres, significantly reducing the space van Ewijk has to get a proper run-up.
With less room to build momentum, it’ll be much harder for him to generate the power and distance he usually gets from the touchline - something Sunderland are clearly hoping will work in their favour.
RegisLe Bris' side take a 2-1 lead into the return fixture at the Stadium of Light, having edged the first leg thanks to a late winner.
Coventry, though, will be looking to turn things around and know they’ll need a strong start if they want to keep their Premier League hopes alive. Kick-off is at 8pm tonight.
