Sunderland are now leading the race to sign midfielder Enzo Le Fee from Roma this transfer window, despite reported interest from LaLiga outfit Real Betis, according to Tuesday’s updates.

Sunderland coach Régis Le Bris, who has already coached Le Fee at Lorient, is one of the key selling points for the unwanted Giallorossi midfielder.

Sunderland ‘favourites’ to sign Le Fee from Roma

According to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio, Sunderland are currently considered the ‘favourites’ to sign Le Fee from Roma this January. The Black Cats are reportedly hoping to bring the 24-year-old to the Stadium of Light on a loan deal with an option to buy.

Reports at the beginning of the month claimed that Real Betis were interested in bringing the Frenchman to LaLiga in January in order to address their midfield issues.

However Sunderland are now the most likely side to sign him in January according to Tuesday’s reports.

Le Fee joined Roma from Ligue 1 side Rennes for a fee of €23m in the summer, but his time at the Stadio Olimpico has not gone to plan up until this point.

Roma became the first side in Serie A to sack their coach in 2024-25, letting go of club legend Daniele De Rossi just four league matches into the season. He was replaced by Ivan Juric, who was unable to turn things around, and has since left and joined Premier League side Southampton.

Claudio Ranieri is now in charge, and will step into a directorship role at the end of the campaign, but he, too, has not taken to Le Fee, who has only made six Serie A appearances since his summer transfer.
