Former Celtic defender Steven Pressley has made a surprise return to management, becoming the new manager of Dundee. The 51-year-old recently left his role as head of player development at Brentford.
In an announcement on Monday afternoon, Pressley was confirmed the appointment as the new Head Coach of Dundee.
It is fair to say that the Dundee supporters need won over after the surprise appointment. Docherty was well liked by supporters, even if their form over the last season was disappointing.
There had been speculation that Pressley’s former teammate Scott Brown could have got the top job after impressing at spells with Fleetwood Town and Ayr United. Another contender had been Shaun Maloney, who recently left his job at Wigan Athletic. Both are highly rated young managers, who could have their own aspirations to become the Celtic manager in due course.
Brown’s relationship with Strachan had been suggested as a potential connection to entice Brown to go to Dens. Although, the Celtic legend will hope that he can guide Ayr into the top division.
Celtic signed Pressley from Hearts in 2007, where he would spend 18 months and win two leagues and a Scottish Cup. Pressley has experience in the league with Falkirk but has had his credentials questioned by the Dundee support, especially with a number of candidates available.
