Last year’s summer transfer window was hot and happening for Barcelona as they explored several options to strengthen their squad despite financial difficulties.

One of their key targets was Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams. The Catalan club showed strong interest in securing his services, and all signs indicated that the player was keen to join.

However, the deal did not materialise as Barcelona were unable to pay his release clause, ultimately forcing them to abandon their pursuit.

Looking back, it seems that missing out on Nico turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Barcelona. The reason behind this lies in the exceptional performances of Raphinha this season.

Under Hansi Flick, the Brazilian has taken his game to new heights, delivering his best season since arriving at the club. His contributions have not only improved but have placed him among the most outstanding players in European football this year.

Comparing Raphinha and Nico

A comparison between Raphinha and Nico this season highlights a stark contrast in their performances.

While the Barcelona winger has been in sensational form, the Athletic Bilbao star has struggled to make a significant impact in statistical terms, despite being an important figure for his team.

Raphinha’s numbers speak for themselves. He has registered 24 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, contributing directly to Barcelona’s attacking output in LaLiga, the Champions League, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.

In LaLiga alone, he has found the net 13 times, making him the third-highest scorer in the league behind Robert Lewandowski (19 goals) and Kylian Mbappe (15 goals).

In contrast, Nico has endured a challenging season, managing just one goal in LaLiga. Although injuries have played a role in his struggles—having suffered setbacks to his ankle, hip, and now another physical issue—his overall contribution has been minimal.

Despite missing only four matches, he has played in 30 games and recorded just five assists, a significantly lower output compared to Raphinha.

Ultimately, Barcelona’s inability to sign Nico Williams may have worked in their favour.

Raphinha has stepped up and established himself as a key player for the team, proving that sometimes, what appears to be a setback can turn out to be an unexpected advantage.
