Barcelona have made an outstanding start to the new La Liga season, with four wins in their opening four matches. This puts them four points clear of their nearest challengers, Real Madrid.

Historically, when Barcelona have begun La Liga in such a strong manner, they have often gone on to become champions. Out of the last 11 instances where they started the league with four consecutive victories, Barça won the title in all but two of those seasons.

Interestingly, in the two seasons they didn’t win, it was not Real Madrid who lifted the trophy either.

History in Barcelona’s favour

The most recent example of this happened in the 2020/21 season when Barcelona won their first four games but ultimately missed out on the title, which was claimed by Atletico Madrid.

Prior to that, in the 2018/19 and 2017/18 campaigns, Barça also started with four wins and went on to win La Liga, with Real Madrid finishing third in both seasons, and Atletico Madrid taking the runner-up spot.

Barcelona also enjoyed strong starts in the 2015/16, 2014/15, and 2012/13 seasons, with Real Madrid trailing behind them in the final standings on each occasion.

However, not every fast start has resulted in a title win. In the 2013/14 campaign, Atletico Madrid dramatically won the league by defeating Barcelona at Camp Nou on the final day.

Another memorable season was 2009/2010, where Barcelona secured the title with 99 points, narrowly edging out Real Madrid, who finished with 96 points.

Going further back, Barça also achieved successful starts in the 1997/98, 1990/91, and 1984/85 campaigns, ultimately winning the league in all three instances.

If history is any indication, Barcelona’s current form could very well be a strong signal that they are on track for yet another La Liga triumph this season.
