FC St. Pauli have taken Burnley striker Andréas Hountondji on loan from Burnley. The Hamburg-based Bundesliga club – after picking up Peterborough’s Ricky-Jade Jones from Peterborough United – have now brought in two strikers from English football this summer. The 22-year-old spent last the second half of season on loan with Standard Liege in the Belgian Pro League, where hey scored four goals and registered two assists in 18 appearances across all competitions.

Burney paid France’s Stade Malherbe Caen €4m to acquire Hountondji last summer. The 15-times-capped Benin international made nine appearances for the Clarets in the EFL Championship before being loaned out last January. Hountondji made little impact for either of his teams in their respective league fixtures last season, scoring three of his four Liege goals in the Europa League playoff.

St. Pauli – a historically low-scoring Bundesliga club last year – have spent the summer rebuilding their attack. Strikers Johannes Eggestein, Simon Zoller, and Andreas Albers were all let go. Winger Elias Saad moved to Augsburg. TheKiezkicker did attempt to sign leading goal-scorer Morgan Guilavogui permanently, but the Frenchman’s parent club RC Lens prevented Guilavogui’s Bundesliga move by exercising a buyback option.

St. Pauli head coach Alexander Blessin lauded his new signing as “an aggressive presser with a sharp transition game“.

In Andréas, we have signed a very interesting player for our squad who adds a valuable element to our attacking options,” St. Pauli sporting director Andreas Bornemann added. “His physicality, pace, and power fit well with our style of play. Andreas combines physical presence with dynamism, pace, and technical potential.

I am very happy to be at FC St. Pauli now and to have the chance to play in the Bundesliga,” Hountondji himself said. “The talks with the sporting director and the coach were great, the club has a very special personality and I want to do my part to ensure that we have a successful season.”
