The Gunners run riot in Lisbon to win away in Europe for the first time since October 2023
Arsenal look to have their stuttering season firmly back on track after a commanding Champions League victory in Portugal. The Gunners were ruthless at Lisbon’s Estadio Jose Alvalade on Tuesday night, thrashing one of Europe’s most in-form teams 5-1 at a ground where they are typically so dominant to really deliver a statement on the biggest stage.
Mikel Arteta had challenged his side to step up to achieve their first away win in the Champions League since October 2023 and they did just that coasting to a 3-0 lead at the interval thanks to well-worked early tap-ins for Gabriel Martinelli and Kai Havertz and an emphatic close-range header from Gabriel, who would later be taken off amid injury worries.
While Sporting rallied themselves after half-time to respond quickly through Goncalo Inacio, Arsenal restored their three-goal advantage from the penalty spot thanks to Bukayo Saka after Ousmane Diomande’s foul on Martin Odegaard. Arsenal later equalled their biggest-ever margin of victory away from home in the Champions League courtesy of a headed rebound dispatched by substitute Leandro Trossard.
