El Clásico is always the one fixture in Spanish football that raises emotions and passion more than any other. Sometimes, however, this can spill over into some unsavoury scenes.
This was the case during the most recent meeting of the sides at the Bernabéu just under a month ago. Spanish Police have announced that they made three arrests as a result of racist chants made during the match, which were aimed at Barcelona players.
This was announced on the social media account of the Spanish Police, but not before they could mistakenly post about it using a photo of Atlético Madrid’s stadium, much to the club’s dismay.
This isn’t the first time there has been disorder in Spanish football stadiums this season, as previous incidents have taken place during the Madrid Derby, as well as several European fixtures.
It will be interesting to see if there is any further response to this most recent incident, as in the past fines have been handed out as well as partial stadium bans.
The powers that be in Spanish football are trying their hardest to cut this type of behaviour out of the game, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see further measures being taken.
