Spain and Belgium matched a Women’s Euros record in an eight-goal thriller in Thun on Monday night.
Montse Tome’s qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2025 with one game to spare after a 6-2 victory against Belgium.
Alexia Putellas scored a brace while Irena Paredes, Esther Gonzalez, Mariona Caldentey and Claudia Pina also got onto the scoresheet.
Belgium twice pulled back Spain to be level at 2-2 after 50 minutes. However, Spain showed their class and ran away to take a historic victory.
Last time out, Gonzalez set the record for the fastest goal by Spain in Women’s Euros history.
With the help of Belgium, Spain matched another record in the tournament’s history on Monday night.
Spain vs Belgium now jointly holds the record for the most goals at a single match in Women’s Euros history.
Between them, Spain and Belgium scored eight goals – matching three other games in the tournament’s history.
England matched that record at Euro 2022 with an 8-0 victory over Norway. This match holds the record for the win by the biggest goal margin in Women’s Euros history.
However, the Lionesses were on the wrong side of a 6-2 defeat to Germany in the final of Euro 2009.
The record was initially set at Euro 2005, when Norway beat Italy 5-3.
Spain could match or equal another Women’s Euros record when they play Italy in their final group stage game.
Montse Tome’s side have 11 goals from their opening two games. If they can score three against Italy, they will match England’s record of 14 goals in a group stage which was set three years ago.
However, it remains to be seen what sort of team Spain puts out in their final game given that they have already qualified for the quarter-finals.
Italy could still be overtaken by Portugal in Group B. However, this would require Italy to lose against Spain, and Portugal to beat Belgium and somehow overturn a -6 goal deficit on Italy.
Spain went into Euro 2025 as favourites to lift the trophy for the first time in Basel on July 27th.
Huge victories over Belgium and Portugal have cemented their status as favourites with bookmakers.
According to the UK’s best betting sites, Spain are 10/11 favourites to win Euro 2025.
Their current nearest challengers are expected to be Germany (9/2) and France 5/1.
England went into Euro 2025 as second-favourites behind Spain. However, following their defeat to France they are now fourth in the odds at 7/1.
