Super Lig side Trabzonspor are again in rumors with Southampton forward Paul Onuachu. Interestingly, as per the club President, the variable demands of the Saints are holding back a move.
Breakout Loanees have been an everpresent phenomenon in Premier League football. At Southampton, it ain't any different, with the club having completed various such deals before.
But, the scenario they currently face is an intriguing one in itself.
It all started with forward Paul Onuachu's loan to Trabzonspor. Initially seen as a normal departure, the move exceeded expectations.
In a year-long loan spell, Onuachu smashed 15 goals, helping Trabzonspor finish 3rd in Super Lig. Understandably, there have been many offers for the Nigerian forward from Turkish clubs.
Especially at Trabzonspor, the efforts have been much more serious. In just over a year, the Super Lig side has approached Southampton many times but failed.
No success after these many attempts seems fishy, and recently, Trabzonspor's President revealed the truth.
Speaking to A Spor, President Ertugrul Dogan exposed Southampton's shady tactics. Dogan said: “We had agreed with Onuachu. Southampton asked for 7, we gave them that, they asked for 10, we went up to 8-9 with bonuses, then they increased it to 15. So, they weren’t going to give him to us.”
Certainly, what the Saints are doing can't be considered morally acceptable. Still, the club's decision makes sense.
Just tell me, which club would let their fast-improving striker go? After scoring his first goal, Onuachu has been leveling up his game fast.
Just yesterday, with a late winner, the Nigerian bagged a crucial win for the club. Then, why won't the Saints pull off these tricks to intervene in a potential transfer?
For now, it's a clear pay-now or walk-away scenario for Trabzonspor. While the Super Lig's 11th February deadline allows them ample time, they would have to pay a hefty amount to swoop Onuachu away.
Let's see, what Trabzonspor's next steps would be.
