Arne Slot’s side take full advantage of latest Man City slip-up to make title statement
Mohamed Salah scored twice to rescue Liverpool against Southampton and send Arne Slot’s side eight points clear at the top of the Premier League.
After Manchester City lost 4-0 against Tottenham on Saturday, Liverpool took full advantage to make a big statement in the title race.
Liverpool went ahead on 30 minutes when Southampton got caught playing out from the back and Dominik Szoboszlai pounced to curl into the top corner.
Southampton levelled on 42 minutes when Andy Robertson fouled Tyler Dibling just inside the area.
Alan Armstrong had his penalty saved by Caoimhin Kelleher but the ball rebounded straight to the Southampton striker who tucked it in to equalise.
A shock was on the cards when Mateus Fernandes finished a brilliant Southampton counter to put Liverpool behind on 56 minutes.
But the Reds equalised on 65 minutes when Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy tried to intercept a ball over the top and Salah got there first to prod the ball into an open net
Salah won it seven minutes from time when Southampton defender Yuki Sugawara handled in the area and the Egyptian made no mistake from the spot.
