Matias Soule shared his impressions from the first half of Roma’s preseason under the leadership of Gian Piero Gasperini.
In an interview with Il Tempo, the Argentine said, “We’re getting along really well. I took a couple of days off due to an ankle problem, but we’re working hard. It’s a tough training camp, but we’re slowly getting used to it and getting ready for the season.”
“Gasperini? It’s going great with him. I speak for myself and I think for the team too. He’s helping us a lot, we’re slowly understanding his ideas, they’re very offensive, he wants to try to keep the ball, come out from the back, something we perhaps didn’t do much before. Above all, I really like having control of the game. Every day we adapt more and more to his gameplan.”
“At first, I thought I’d have a bit more difficulty. But his idea of always playing forward, of being well-propelled towards the goal, is really appealing to me. I feel great and I’m doing very well. I can play almost any position.”
“I could even play on the left, as a full-back, or as a winger. But obviously, I like this more. I like being closer to the goal, being there between the lines. It’s a different thing than last year. But I feel great and I’m doing very well. I have a lot to improve on, and I’m learning.”
“My first season at Roma? It wasn’t great at first; there were some difficulties within the team and individually. But little by little, after the arrival of Coach Ranieri, I regained the calm and confidence I needed. By playing simple every time and always trying to give my best, things improved a bit, especially at the end of the season. Now I feel very good, with full confidence.”
“Yes, I had a few offers in January, so I had to talk to the coach to ask him what he wanted to do with me. I wanted to know if I would continue not to play and therefore if it would be better to leave to get minutes. But in talking to him, he told me he would give me my opportunities and that a good moment would come for me.”
“He gave me this opportunity, and I have to thank him, because he gave me the confidence and peace of mind to express myself at my best. I have the desire to do well all year, I hope I can start like I finished last year.”
“We want to go all the way in all competitions, the league, the Europa League, and the Coppa Italia. Last year, we almost reached our goal of qualifying for the Champions League, just missing one point. It would have been fantastic, especially considering how we started the season and the winning streak we’ve had since. I hope we can achieve it this year.”
“There needs to be calm around the team. We’re working every day and in every game. We’re always trying to improve to reach our goals, and I hope we can achieve them. There’s a great working atmosphere with the coach and the entire staff, and we work hard. By staying united, we can really do better, I hope so.”
“Paredes? We miss him so much. He and Paulo were always together. Now he’s chosen to return home. It was his dream. I hope Boca can recover. I’m happy for him.”
“Echeverri? I just asked him how he was, but I really don’t know anything about the transfer market. I hadn’t spoken to him in a long time, and now he’s replied to me on Instagram, but honestly, I don’t know anything. He didn’t ask me for advice on Roma or Rome.”
“I’m really happy here. The fans and the city are incredible. I even bought a house in Rome. I’ve settled in, and I hope to stay for a long time and do things well. The first period was a bit difficult, but little by little, with hard work, I’ve managed to change everything a bit. Now I’m really happy.”
“I hope to win something in these three years, and I want to do it with Roma as soon as possible. This is a project that aims to put Roma back where it deserves to be. We haven’t been in the Champions League for a long time, and that would be a fantastic achievement.”
“The Friedkins? They’re always there, you can see it in all the investments they make, because they want to do something good and special. Then the coach, who came here after spending many years at Atalanta where he did very well, chose Roma because there’s clearly a good and ambitious project. The club is helping us, and we have to help them on the pitch to bring Roma back to the top.”
“The new signings? I really liked El Ayanoui, he’s a player who can do everything, good technically, he knows how to recover the ball well.”
