Liverpool head into a crucial Monday night trip to St James’ Park buoyed by their opening-day 4-2 win over Bournemouth. Goals from Mohamed Salah and Federico Chiesa sealed the victory, while Hugo Ekitike impressed on his debut. Yet the backdrop to this fixture is dominated by transfer talk, with Newcastle’s Alexander Isak linked to a move away amid growing tension on Tyneside.
For Arne Slot, this game is about momentum and showing that Liverpool’s £300m summer rebuild can withstand the toughest tests. Speaking to Sky Sports, the Liverpool manager expressed satisfaction with his squad while leaving the door open for late business.
“No, I’m very happy with the squad we’re having now,” Slot said. “Very happy, as you could see, Friday night as well, that we could impact the game from the bench, as we did so many times last season. So, yeah, happy, but as always, if it’s 10 days to go, I don’t know how long the market is open, we will always look.”

Liverpool’s interest in Isak is no secret, but Slot refused to entertain speculation. Instead, he highlighted Ekitike’s bright start: “I think the way Hugo Ekitike started his career at Liverpool, we should talk about him and say how well he did. It would be unfair to him to talk about other targets if they are actually there. And if they are there, we don’t speak about them in public. But I think the main thing should be that we talk about how well Hugo has done until now.”
His words underline a commitment to focus on those already delivering, while acknowledging Liverpool’s willingness to move if the market offers opportunities.
Despite Isak’s absence, Slot knows Newcastle remain dangerous. “He scored against us in the League Cup final, and he scored against us in the away game [last season],” he said.
“So yeah, if they have him, he’s a big, big, big threat, but like any other team in the Premier League, if one is injured or not there, it’s not like the manager has to look at his bench and say, ‘now I have no one to play anymore’. For them to play [Anthony] Gordon, [Anthony] Elanga and [Harvey] Barnes and still having [Jacob] Murphy on the bench like last time, maybe it changes this game, it tells you how much quality they still have available.”
Slot also reflected on past battles, praising Newcastle’s intensity and their League Cup triumph: “They fully deserved to win the League Cup final from us. Even if we would have been at our best, I would be far from sure we could have beaten that Newcastle team on that day.”

Liverpool have not lost a league match to Newcastle since 2015, but Slot stressed improvement is needed. “What I do know is that we need to be much better than we were. In the end of the season, it was harder and harder for us to win our game. I think we had to rely a few times on our set-pieces back then as well.”
With Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham starting strongly, this fixture carries weight. Another win would reinforce Liverpool’s title credentials in Slot’s second season at the helm.
Arne Slot’s calm authority shines through in these comments. Liverpool fans will welcome his satisfaction with the squad, but the subtle admission that “we will always look” hints that business is not closed. Speculation around Isak continues, yet Slot’s focus on Ekitike is telling. The young forward impressed on debut and represents the type of signing that could define this era; dynamic, hungry and versatile.
This trip to Newcastle feels like a real test. The atmosphere at St James’ Park is ferocious, and even without Isak, Howe’s side boasts attacking depth. However, Liverpool’s bench strength, highlighted by Slot, offers confidence. The ability to change games late was a hallmark of last season’s title win, and that resilience will be needed again.
Fans will also appreciate Slot’s humility when recalling the League Cup defeat. It signals respect for Newcastle but also a recognition that Liverpool must evolve. Winning this game would not only send a message to rivals but reaffirm Slot’s grip on a team adapting to new leadership after Klopp. With Ekitike, Chiesa and Salah firing, this is a fixture that could shape early momentum in the title race.
