NWSL coach Nick Cushing is not in the running to become the Arsenal women’s new head coach. Jonas Eidevall, a few weeks ago, resigned from his position as the Arsenal women’s manager following a poor start to the new season and ultimately the team’s 2-1 defeat to Chelsea. Mounting pressure from the club to sack him, given the disappointing start to the season by the Gunner women, prompted his decision to step down.
For the past few weeks, Eidevall’s assistant, Renee Slegers, has been overseeing the women’s team in an interim capacity. Meanwhile, there have been indications that the decision-makers at Arsenal are actively working behind the scenes to secure the next permanent manager. Nick Cushing, the coach of the New York City FC and a former coach of the Manchester City women, emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Eidevall recently. However, Roberto Abramowitz has dispelled the rumor, revealing that Cushing has assured him of staying with New York City for the upcoming season and has not had any discussions with Arsenal about their managerial search.
The New York based sports journalist tweeted, “Nick Cushing just “confirmed” to me in his press conference that he will be with New York City FC next year. And that there has been no contact from Arsenal about their women’s team.”
If Arsenal has not reached out to Cushing regarding the managerial vacancy for their women’s team, it raises intriguing questions about which managers are being considered and the accuracy of the rumors circulating. Mystery surrounds the search for a new manager for the Arsenal women’s team, but one can only hope that the eventual choice will be well worth it.
That said, let’s also hope that Renee Slegers, who has been performing exceptionally well, as the interim manager, will be considered for a permanent role, as she consistently demonstrates her capabilities game after game. With Arsenal’s 5-0 win over Brighton last night, at the Emirates Stadium, Slegers has kept that unbeaten streak since the exit if Eidevall.
Gooners seem very happy with Renee Slegers at the helm – I hear fans are even thinking up a special song for her!
