The EFL have confirmed today (Wednesday, 18th June) that the club have been handed a three-window-long transfer ban for fee-paying deals after exceeding 30 days of late payments over the past year.

The most recent case of Chansiri failing to give money to people on time came at the end of May, when the players, coaches and staff at Hillsborough were supposed to receive their monthly wages. A number of Wednesday's first-team members are still yet to see their salaries for their month's work.

A statement from the EFL read: "In accordance with EFL Regulations, the restriction will cover the entirety of this summer’s window and two full windows thereafter (Winter 2026 and Summer 2026). The Club has notified the EFL of its intention to appeal this decision and this will be heard in due course."

Regarding the late May payments to the club's staff, the EFL said: "Separately, on 3 June 2025, the EFL issued charges against the Club and owner Mr Dejphon Chansiri in respect of non-payment of Player wages in March 2025 and May 2025.

"This matter is being considered by an Independent Disciplinary Commission, and because of the ongoing proceedings, the League is unable to comment further at this time."

The man that sold the Owls to Chansiri, Milan Mandaric, is set to come over to the United Kingdom to see if he can help foster a deal that would see the Thai businessman relinquish control of the club.

Mandaric was the head honcho at Hillsborough for five years before he accepted Chansiri's £30 million offer. He stressed, in an interview with BBC Radio Sheffield, that there needed to be a change in ownership otherwise there was a serious threat of the club heading even further in the wrong direction.

"I would have to get involved. If I'm going to bring somebody, I would have to get involved myself as well. I have no problem with that." said the Serbian businessman on his potential role in a Wednesday takeover.

"There are two things. You have to find the right person, but more importantly you have to have Mr Chansiri agree on that, and that's the difficult part, to be honest with you.

"For some reason he doesn't want to sell it because he is asking some crazy price which he will never get - well over £100 million is what I understand.

"He'll not get that price and he is going to be the obstacle. No matter what we try to do or what we could do, he's going to be there and be an obstacle. But I will give it a try.

"I'm not going to give up. I'm going to test him when I come there. I'm going to try to see him with a couple of my people and be very safe with him, tell him that he is going to destroy the club if he doesn't let new people get involved, people like me, and get back the relationship with the supporters and get going in the right direction."

Chansiri turned down £55 million offer for Sheffield Wednesday

The most publicly known group trying to buy Wednesday from Chansiri is an American consortium led by John Flanagan and an Owls-supporting ex-pat named Adam Shaw.

Should they take over, Shaw revealed that he has big plans for the club, including a 55,000-seater stadium.

Agreeing a deal with the current chairman won't be easy though. Flanagan previously suggested that the consortium's valuation of the Championship club was not close to what Chansiri would consider selling for.

His consortium partner has since revealed to The Athletic that they had bids of $65 million (£48 million) and $75 million (£55 million) rejected.
