Ex-Burnley star Ben Mee could solve Sheffield Wednesday's troubles on the pitch amidst financial troubles
Ben Mee could solve Sheffield Wednesday's on-the-pitch struggles amidst financial worries
Former Burnley legend Mee could solve on-the-field troubles for Sheffield Wednesday, with the defender being heavily linked to the Yorkshire club.
After coming away from their opening Championship fixture with a 2-1 loss away to Leicester City, questions regarding Sheffield Wednesday's defence have arisen, adding to the club's current turmoil.
However, with the club being heavily linked to the seasoned professional, Mee, the Owls fans may have a rare sense of hope if the defender was to put pen-to-paper, as his signature would surely bring defensive stability that was lacking in their loss to Leicester.
Mee is currently a free agent after coming to the end of his three-year contract with Premier League outfit Brentford, and has been offered to the Owls in spite of their current ongoings off-the-pitch.
After spending 11 years at Burnley followed by a three-year stint at Brentford, Mee offers a wealth of experience and know-how which could be vital for Sheffield Wednesday in a time of turmoil.
As well as experience, Mee, having played in the top-flight for the majority of his career, will mean the defender brings about a sense of defensive stability and, more importantly, leadership.
Having captained Burnley between 2019-2022, Mee is no stranger to being a main voice on and off the pitch and would instantly be able to offer guidance to Wednesday's youthful squad.
With leadership qualities being at the forefront of Mee's characteristics, becoming one of the senior players in the group will allow the 35-year-old to neatly gel with the experienced pros at Wednesday, such as the likes of Barry Bannan and Liam Palmer.
In a time of much change at Hillsborough, with players coming and going and new boss Pedersen now at the helm, the signing of Mee will certainly make his life a little easier due to the reliability factor on the centre-back.
With the 35-year-old currently being a free agent, his links to the Yorkshire side would be a no-brainer transfer due to the low-cost his transfer would bring and could well be the answer to Wednesday's defensive struggles.
The Owls operated in a back five against Leicester with the 20-year-old Gabriel Otegbayo being named among the centre-backs.
With the youngster having a lot asked of him on Sunday, the experience of Mee would be a perfect fit for Wednesday's backline and would compliment the likes of Max Lowe and Dominic Iorfa.
Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen when asked about the links to the defender, said to BBC Radio Sheffield: "We have a lot of names, in the process where we are, we really have to see if we can find the right player. We have to hurry up, but we also do it with big patience, because we still need the right player that can help us, not only for three months, six months, but who can help us through the whole season."
Pedersen went on to say: "We are doing all we can in the background to be prepared to do something quickly... I hope that we have maybe one or two players before the next league game, because otherwise we will only have 12 senior players."
With a lack of senior players being a real worry for Pedersen's side, the signing of Mee would make him the most experienced player in the Owls squad.
Mee's signature would surely be a shrewd bit of business that could help Wednesday's fight to get back on track in the near future as well as stabilise the squad for the long season ahead.
