Sheffield Wednesday are chasing the former Norwich favourite Onel Hernandez, who left Carrow Road in the summer, but there may be complications.
Sheffield Wednesday are in the hunt for former Norwich City fan favourite Onel Hernandez, who was released earlier this summer, but getting him to Hillsborough may not be straightforward.
The Owls are in desperate need of new players following the lifting of their transfer embargo, following two straight Championship defeats which have left them joint-bottom of the Championship table alongside city rivals Sheffield United.
Wednesday lost their opening game at Leicester 2-1 despite a spirited performance, but a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Stoke City has shone a light on their need to rebuild following a disastrous summer which has seen them left with just 16 senior players.
New head coach Henrik Pedersen is crying out to bulk up his first-team squad with senior players, with the substitutes' bench for their two league games so far having been fleshed out with youth players, but despite the lifting of the transfer embargo, bringing new additions remains a challenge.
The Sheffield Star has reported that Sheffield Wednesday have had the highly-experienced former Norwich winger Onel Hernandez - who is a free agent after being released by Norwich City at the end of last season - in for training as he looks to get fixed up with a new club.
It has been claimed that the Cuba international has been spotted at Hillsborough and has been working with the currently sparse first-team squad, although it's unknown whether they'll be able to get a deal over the line to add the 32-year-old to their number.
The biggest potential roadblock to such a signing taking place is likely to be the financial restrictions that are still in place over Wednesday, despite the lifting of the transfer embargo, which came about as a result of the club using their Premier League solidarity payment money to clear their remaining outstanding wages and other payments outstanding for the end of July.
As reported by Andy Giddings of BBC Sheffield last week, Wednesday are unable to land any new signings until current owner Dejphon Chansiri can prove that he has the funds to pay wages for the foreseeable future, and based on recent months, that may be easier said than done.
Despite having had the transfer embargo lifted, Sheffield Wednesday remain under strict rules regarding which players they can bring to Hillsborough. All of their new signings have to be externally agreed as part of a business plan put in place by the EFL's Club Financial Reporting Unit (CFRU).
Wednesday are having difficulties getting any new signings through because they're having difficulty persuading the CFRU that they'll be able to pay his wages at the end of each month while Dejphon Chansiri is running the club.
The club have paid their players' wages late four times in the last five months, and they were only paid at the end of July - and late - as a result of the club receiving their Premier League solidarity payment, the type of payment which they will not see again until the start of January.
As such, it is understandable that the CFRU would have reservations over the club bringing in new players when nothing seems to have changed yet in terms of the club's broader financial position.
These restrictions are already biting Sheffield Wednesday. A deal with former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper had been widely reported to be close to completion, but they couldn't get that over the line before last weekend's match at Stoke.
It may even be that the CFRU will not be convinced to allow Wednesday to bring in any new players until a sale of the club has been completed, and there are few signs that this is imminent at the moment, which may make Onel Hernandez and others an impossibility for them until the club is sold.
