Sheffield United have suffered an injury setback that will impact their opening game of the season against Bristol City.

Ruben Selles has confirmed that Tom Davies will be out for at least a month, meaning his availability for the Blades’ clash against Gerhard Struber’s side is in doubt.

The Spaniard is overseeing his first pre-season with the Yorkshire outfit after being appointed manager during the summer, replacing Chris Wilder.

Sheffield United will have their sights set on gaining promotion to the Premier League after narrowly missing out last year, losing the play-off final to Sunderland.

Selles has claimed that Davies will be out for around a month after picking up an injury in Girona.

It’s also been confirmed that Jamie Shackleton is set to be absent for a similar amount of time, potentially keeping him out of the clash against Bristol City as well, but the Sheffield United boss was able to provide a positive update on Sydie Peck’s injury situation.

“Sydie picked up a late injury, so he has not been able to start pre-season with us,” said Selles, via The Star.

“He has been training, but it was more about building him up, and hopefully, he will be involved in the next game.

“With Tom Davies, it is a little bit different.

“He got an injury in Girona, and so we expect him to be out for some weeks.

“He will be back in approximately a month.

“He’s unlucky. The way we do things and the way we try to perform demands a lot from the players.

“And with Tom, the most important thing is that he recovers well and when he comes back, he stays healthy for the rest of the season.”

Sheffield United will host Struber’s side on 9 August in a 5.30pm kick-off.

Early injury issues are a concern

Picking up injuries in pre-season is not how a manager wants to start life at a new club, but it’s the situation Selles now faces.

At the very least, Davies and Shackleton won’t be out for long, but it could be more difficult for them to get back up to match fitness compared to if this injury happened in the middle of the campaign.

Supporters will be keen for Peck to play a key role in the side this upcoming season, so his injury issue only being minor is a positive development.
