Scholes ‘fears’ INEOS will offload promising Red who ‘makes the wrong decisions’ too often

Paul Scholes is concerned that Manchester United may feel inclined to sell one of their most promising talents to comply with financial regulations this summer.
It’s an entirely plausible prospect, given the number of top-flight clubs who’ve had to reluctantly sanction sales in order to create more room for manoeuvre around the Profit and Sustainability laws.
However, United are already on course to generate at least £40 million of straight profit through the transfer of Marcus Rashford. Whether that be to Aston Villa, who have the option of making his move permanent at the end of his loan spell, or another club, the forward’s time at Old Trafford is poised to come to an end one way or another this year.

That’s not who Scholes had in mind, though. Prior to last night’s Europa League semi-finals on TNT Sports, he expressed suspicions that INEOS will look to offload Alejandro Garnacho at the end of the campaign.
Scholes told the panel: “I fear with him that we will end up selling him for £50m-£60m for PSR reasons, possibly this summer – it has been rumoured, hasn’t it? I fear he might go somewhere else, he might play in a 4-3-3, and he will end up scoring 25 or 30 goals for somebody. That is how good I think this lad could be.
“Shoehorn him into this system, and I think it might be an issue because I am not sure he can play wing-back. I am not sure he is clever enough to be in that No.10 role, I am struggling to find a position for him in this system.”
The 20-year-old could well recuperate a substantial fee due to his promising showings across his last three seasons of senior action, and he won’t be short of suitors if that is the case. Napoli had a £45m bid rejected for him in January, while it was also reported that Chelsea believed they’d laid the groundwork for a summer deal after holding talks with his representatives.
Garnacho is believed to be among a group of Reds deemed sellable assets, with Amad, Bruno Fernandes, Patrick Dorgu and Harry Maguire the only players granted immunity from an upcoming summer clearout.
During the tie, Garnacho showed his lack of clinicality when he squandered an early one-on-one, whereby he opted to chip the goalkeeper and watched his effort trickle past the post.
It prompted Scholes to question the winger’s decision-making, which is a sentiment that will undoubtedly be echoed by fans after some of his performances this term.
“I have never seen Garnacho score a goal like this, he is not the player with that kind of guile,” said the former midfielder. “With the pace he has got, he should just go around the keeper. We said before the game he gets in brilliant positions, he is great at running through, but a lot of the time he makes the wrong decision.”
