Bayern Munich’s interest in Malo Gusto is a topic we’ve touched on before, but it’s not one that gets a a lot of air time compared to some other deals out there.

Bayern far off deal for full back

The right back was superb in the Club World Cup final, but otherwise had some pretty long spells of bad form in the last year, and many fans would be happy to sell him at the right price. We suspect the sporting directors feel the same way too.

It doesn’t seem like Bayern will be that team however – as Christian Falk has said in his Daily Briefing today:

“We always said Bayern have to sell players in defence first before they can bring in new ones… Bayern would have to sell Kim [Min-jae] first and this has still yet to happen. It’s too much time to wait, and I think it’s the same situation with Malo Gusto. So, until Bayern sell some players, these Chelsea stars will remain interesting but not hot topics.”

Chelsea would need to go directly to the market to replace Gusto

If Chelsea were to sell Gusto, they would need to get into the market to replace him without doubt. We love Josh Acheampong and think he’s ready to step up as second choice behind Reece James, but we’ve seen countless pieces of evidence from Enzo Maresca that he doesn’t think the teenager is ready, no matter how highly he rates him.

Given James’ injury record and the way that the club have quite rightly decided to treat him very carefully by almost never playing him twice in a week, backup right back at Chelsea is a very good gig to have, and plenty of top players would be tempted, knowing how many games they would get.

Still, let’s not get ahead of ourselves – for now it looks like Gusto will be staying anyway.
