Salomon Rondon played only one season at Newcastle United, before he and manager Rafa Benitez were pushed out of the club by Mike Ashley.

The all-time record goalscorer for his national side Venezuela, always speaks warmly of his time on Tyneside.

Salomon Rondon was excellent in that 2018/19 season, 30 Premier League starts for NUFC and 18 direct goal involvements, scoring 11 and seven assists.

Tonight Real Oviedo are at home to Real Madrid and Salomon Rondon has given a big interview to The Athletic, part of it seeing him talk about Newcastle United, as well as the Alexander Isak situation in particular:

“I had such a great time at Newcastle United.

“The fans gave me their affection from the first minute and St James’ Park was a marvellous place.

“It was a privilege to wear the No 9 shirt. I remember I was the first No 9 to win the fans’ player of the year award since Alan Shearer.

“Things are completely different there now, for sure.

“It’s a pity not to have played for Newcastle United when the club had more ambition.”

Salomon Rondon on the Alexander Isak situation:

“It’s a difficult issue to give an opinion on.

“Isak is a great player for Newcastle, has done great things for them.

“But you also have to understand the club does not want to lose a player like him.

“It’s a sad issue really.

“I hope it gets resolved as soon as possible.”

Every problem has a solution, except death…

“Sometimes, clubs and owners need money, or to renew the squad.

“A player can be the least informed about the situation. They offer you to different teams, different markets, which sometimes are attractive, sometimes not.

“A player also has to fight for their own interests, things they want to achieve. There can be a conflict, but the idea is to look for a way out where all parties benefit.
