At times like this the world doesn't know how to react. Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva passing away has left many of us in shock.
For those that knew the two of them, the void they leave behind is even greater. Their loves one have a deep wound that will never fully heal.
This is a loss that is unimaginable.
As they were laid to rest, hundreds of people attended the funeral, including a delegation from Liverpool as well as Jota's Portugal teammates.
Among the grieving people, Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo's presence at the funeral was most touching.
Only yesterday the duo were lining up for Al Hilal in Orlando, taking on Fluminense in the Club World Cup quarter-finals.
Both of them will have been very close to Jota and both were visibly shaken with emotion ahead of the game, when a moment of silence was observed for the former Liverpool star and his brother.
For Neves this is a relationship that stretches back years. He had played with Jota at Porto and then at Wolves, they were teammates for several years.
In the Portugal national team they were playing beside each other since 2019, when Jota made his debut for his country.
On his Instagram account, Neves left a touching tribute to Jota.
"Bug, wherever you are I know you will read this, we were never this lame and I may now regret it a little, but you know what you mean to me as much as I know what I am to you," Neves wrote.
"More than a friendship, we're family, and we won't stop it just because now you decided to sign a contract a little further away from us! When I go to the selection, you'll still be next to me at the dinner table, on the bus, on the plane... you'll always be there with me as always. Let's keep laughing, making plans, sharing our life with each other.
"I'm going to make sure you're always present and I'll make sure that your loved ones never lack anything while you're there, far away but thinking of us, waiting for us. Life has brought us together and now it can’t tear us apart. We've achieved some great things together, we still have a lot to go, I know we can. From today on, you will enter the field with me and we will follow our path together, on the stage where we met.
"Diogoal, you are my favorite lemonade!!"
It's a touching tribute and Neves went a step further. Alongside Cancelo, the two of them travelled back to Gondomar all the way from Orlando to be at the funeral.
Neves was even among the close friends and family who carried Jota's coffin and laid him to rest. The strength to be able to do that, the willingness to fly back for the funeral just goes to show the kind of friend Neves is.
It's also a testament to the kind of man Jota was. He was loved and adored by so many, and that's why his loss hurts us so deeply.
