The soon-to-be Red Devils boss signed off in style in his final home game

Ruben Amorim believes the manner of Sporting’s stunning 4-1 victory over Manchester City was “written” ahead of his move to Manchester United next week.

The 39-year-old enjoyed a sensational final home game in charge of the Portuguese champions, as they came from behind to thrash Pep Guardiola’s side in Lisbon.

After Viktor Gyokeres equalised seven minutes before half time with his first goal of another hat-trick, Sporting raced out of the traps following the break, scoring from the kick off, and then again moments later.

While suggesting changes came at half time, Amorim believed the win was meant to be, saying: “We changed tactically in the second half, we closed down the middle better, but until 3-1 there was no change at all because it was two situations in a row. Manchester City even missed a penalty. It had to happen like that. It was written."

Prior to the game, the next United boss jokingly said he would be labelled the “next Sir Alex Ferguson” if he beat their cross-town rivals on Tuesday night, but he clarified his comments, and outlined his plan for the impending heavy media coverage.

"That was a joke. I'm certainly not going to read anything for six months. I did the same at Sporting. I'm not going to read anything or have access to anything. It's the only way to do my job and things well.”

Amorim’s final game in charge of Sporting comes on Sunday when he faces former side Braga. He will then officially take charge of United, with his first game on November 24 against Ipswich Town at Portman Road.
