Chelsea have made it to the knock-out stage of the Club World Cup, and from here they really do have a chance of winning the thing.
The Blues first have to beat Benfica tomorrow night, and then one of Palmeiras or Botafogo. After that it’s a question of likely beating Man City or Inter Milan, and they’re into the final.
Not easy, but certainly their chances have improved since dodging a draw against Bayern in this round. According to Romeo Lavia’s tour diary, the team have always believed they’re in with a chance.

“We didn’t need to reach the knockout stage to realise what we could achieve at the Club World Cup. We felt we had a chance from day one; we’ve always had that confidence in ourselves.” the midfielder said.
“It wasn’t easy to get out of our group. I know you’ve heard about the weather and that was a challenge for all of us. We faced good teams, too, so we’ve had to stay focused and give our maximum. That’s what has got us through.
“Every experience we have out here – and back home – helps us develop as a team. Most of the boys are the same age, so we’re discovering new things and overcoming tough moments together. It’s what makes us stronger.”
While winning the tournament would of course be excellent, this is really what we would like to take from all this. If the team can grow together and improve with the experience of all travelling and living together, that can be a huge boost for the season.
Enzo Maresca is getting to know these players better, and they’re learning about each other too.
