Roman Abramovich set to break silence on Chelsea sale | OneFootball

Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Chelsea three years ago, and he is finally set to break his silence on what exactly happened.

Abramovich was Chelsea owner for 19 years between 2003-2022. He initially bought the club for £140 million and the Blues won 21 major honours in that period, including two Champions Leagues, five Premier League titles, and five FA Cups.

In his new book, Sanctioned, Nick Purewal looks at exactly what happened and speaks exclusively to Abramovich as well as other key stakeholders at Chelsea.

Since the Russian sold the club to a consortium led by Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, they have experienced nothing like the success they are used to, finishing 12th and sixth in the two full seasons since Abramovich left.

They have not qualified for the Champions League in the last three years, nor have they won a trophy. This campaign may be the first in which they can break both of these streaks. They currently sit sixth in the Premier League with five games to play and know that a fifth placed finish will be enough to secure entry into Europe’s elite competition next season.

Enzo Maresca’s side are in the semi-final of the UEFA Conference League and will face Djurgarden in the first leg next week.

Abramovich has not publicly spoken since selling the club and the book details a two part interview in which he tells all. The Russian sold the club for £2.5 billion, all of which still remains frozen in an account.

The three-month period in 2022 in which the conflict between Ukraine and Russia started and Abramovich was forced to sell the club was full of chaos, so much so that the sale of Chelsea was sanctioned much quicker than a normal sale would be.
