Andy Robertson says it was “not nice” to see Liverpool teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold get booed by fans at Anfield on Sunday.

The right-back played in front of a home crowd for the first time since announcing his impending exit from the club in the summer when he was introduced in the second half of their 2-2 draw with Arsenal.

Alexander-Arnold was met by a chorus of boos when he replaced Conor Bradley in the 67th minute, with supporters unhappy about his expected move to Real Madrid.

After the final whistle Robertson said he will miss “one of my best friends”, but added that he was not going to tell supporters how they should feel about the player’s decision to leave Liverpool.

“Disappointed to lose a good friend, he’s an amazing player and an amazing person,” the Scot told Sky Sports.

“He has pushed me through and made me a better player. His legacy will always be there, he’s done so much for this club.

“He will be missed for me as one of my best friends in the game, we’ve done it all together. He’s took me to levels I never knew existed.

“It hasn’t been an easy one for Trent but he has made the decision. It was not nice to see him get booed but you can’t tell people how to feel. That’s how I feel about it and I’m not going to tell anyone else how to feel about it.”

Alexander-Arnold congratulated Robertson from the sideline after the left-back set up Cody Gakpo for Liverpool’s opener, his first Premier League assist of the season.

“We’re always delighted for each other with assists and contributing, it has been a huge part of our game for the eight years that we have played together. We’re always looking for each other and it was nice to see him coming up to me for once.”
