Robert Lewandowski was the star of the show as Barcelona secured a comprehensive 4-1 win over Girona in the Catalan derby.

The Polish international scored a brace in the second half, thereby beating a record held by Ferenc Puskás – the player with the most number of goals in La Liga since turning 36.

Apart from his goals, Lewandowski was a nuisance for Girona defenders and ended up securing the Man of the Match award.

What Lewandowski said after the game

Speaking to the press after the game, Lewandowski talked about his age and that hasn’t deterred him from continuing at the top level.

“People talk about my age, but I know I’m working as hard as I always have. I want to play at the highest level for a few more years. I feel in excellent physical condition. There’s no difference between where I was a few years ago and where I am now, stat-wise,” he said (h/t Diario SPORT).

As a matter of fact, Lewandowski even said that he wants to score at least 100 goals for Barcelona, with his current tally standing at 97 goals in 137 competitive matches.

However, the Pole pointed out that he is equally keen about winning titles at Barcelona.

“Reaching 100 goals with Barcelona is one of the goals, that’s clear. It’s a dream. We still have a lot of games ahead of us. We want to play the cup final, the Champions League, and the league, too,” he said.

“For me, the most important thing is what I contribute collectively to the team. I know that if I score two goals, I will have helped the team. The most important thing is confidence. If I’m in or near the penalty area, I know that if the ball reaches me, the goal is in my mind,” he added.

Talking about the game itself, Lewandowski admitted that Barcelona lacked the final product in the initial phase but offered more dynamism in the second half.

“We controlled everything, but we lacked the final pass. In the second half, we were more offensive and created more chances. We scored several goals, and that’s important because if we don’t score early, we have to be patient and stick to the plan,” he said.

“If you score four goals, you can always say we played a very good game,” the veteran added.

Finally, the former Bayern Munich star talked about his second goal of the night, where he produced a scissor-like finish.

“I thought I was behind the defender, and the ball was passing between me and the goalkeeper, and behind the defender at the same time. I knew that if I touched the ball, whether I tried to control it or shoot it towards goal, something could happen,” he said.

“I think that goal was very important, because it brought us back, not just into the game, but back on the winning path, and then we were able to control the game and try to score more goals, and we did that,” he concluded.
