Declan Rice has vowed that Arsenal will keep going despite falling 15 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League title race.
Arsenal dropped points for the third straight game after a 1-1 draw at Manchester United. Rice’s brilliant equaliser rescued a point for the Gunners, who were unable to break down an organised Manchester United team for much of the contest.
The Red Devils took the lead in the final moments of the first half when Bruno Fernandes curled a fantastic free-kick past David Raya. The positioning of the wall was contentious, but Fernandes found the corner of the goal Raya left unguarded.
United had chances to add to that lead with Arsenal reliant on Raya. The Spaniard stopped superbly from Noussair Mazraoui and Joshua Zirkzee at close range to keep the Gunners in the game.
Arsenal’s equaliser arrived on 74 minutes, as Rice wonderfully whipped Jurrien Timber’s cutback into the far corner. Moments later, a last-ditch intervention denied Rasmus Hojlund with Rice celebrating the challenge wildly.
In a dramatic conclusion, Raya produced a fine double save to ensure Arsenal left Manchester with a point. The draw, however, does little for their title hopes that have faded fast in recent weeks.
Leaders Liverpool now need just 16 points from their final six games to be sure of the title, but Rice has said Arsenal ‘will keep going’ despite a challenging run-in.
“In the first half, we had some beautiful bits of play but didn’t have that cutting edge. In the second half, we were very naive and almost gave the game to Man United. To get back in the game and to score and keep pushing. It’s probably a fair point in the end,” the England midfielder said speaking to Sky Sports.
“We scored seven midweek and that’s not luck. PSV hadn’t lost at home for two years. Man United did well and sat in the low block well. it can take 90 minutes to break that down. There wasn’t much in the game.
“I’ve not seen the goal back. It felt like the ball flew over us at a low height. It [the wall for the free-kick] did feel far back. Anthony [Taylor] is the ref, he makes that decision.
“I was happy. I think it’s a bit of football banter between me and the fans. It’s an area I want to keep getting in and I’ve been creating more chances. I need to keep adding goals. The manager wants to play me at number eight to add goals and assists.
“The chance at the end with Bruno and David making two great saves, that’s why I say that naivety. it was down to us and we could have thrown the game away.
“Like the manager said, we’ll keep going until the end of the season. Liverpool have been amazing all year. We’re Arsenal. We’ve been hit hard by injuries. We’ll keep going and we’ll be alright.”
