Newcastle’s Winger Search: Assane Diao on the Radar but Unlikely Move This Summer

Newcastle United’s hunt for a right-winger continues, with Como’s Assane Diao emerging as a potential long-term target. As reported by Football Insider, Eddie Howe’s side are assessing their options for the summer, aiming to strengthen the squad after Miguel Almiron’s departure. However, Diao’s recent move to Italy and Como’s reluctance to sell mean a deal is far from imminent.

Newcastle’s Transfer Plans and Right-Wing Priority

Football Insider has confirmed that Newcastle’s primary focus this summer is recruiting a new right-winger. With Almiron gone and Jacob Murphy’s role still uncertain, the club is actively scouting options. PSV’s Johan Bakayoko and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo are among the high-profile names linked with a switch to St James’ Park.

Newcastle’s scouts have also been tracking Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo, who has impressed in the Premier League this season. However, the interest in Diao represents a slightly different strategy – a younger, long-term project rather than an immediate first-team reinforcement.

Assane Diao’s Rise and Como’s Stance

Diao, 19, has made an instant impact at Como under the management of Cesc Fabregas, scoring five goals in nine league appearances. His performances have drawn widespread interest, with Newcastle’s scouts taking notice.

Football Insider’s Pete O’Rourke noted on the Inside Track podcast that Diao is still raw but has significant potential, stating:

“Newcastle’s scouts have been impressed by Diao’s development in Serie A. He’s still refining his game, but his ability is clear.”

However, Como are unwilling to entertain offers unless they receive what they call “crazy money.” Having signed Diao from Real Betis for £10 million in January, they are in no rush to cash in.

Realistic Transfer Prospects This Summer

Despite their interest, Newcastle’s financial limitations mean a major bid for Diao is unlikely at this stage. The Magpies are prioritising immediate reinforcements rather than investing heavily in unproven talent.

Last summer, Brentford came close to signing Diao, only for the deal to fall through before his move to Italy. That saga highlights just how quickly his stock has risen and how competitive the market for emerging talent is becoming.

Diao remains a player to watch, but unless Newcastle shift their focus towards long-term squad planning over short-term necessity, a move in 2024 seems improbable.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

Newcastle fans may feel a mix of expectation and scepticism regarding this report. On one hand, it’s exciting to see the club targeting young, high-potential players, but there’s also a clear concern about how realistic this deal actually is.

With Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions limiting spending, Newcastle must be selective. A move for Diao would require a major outlay, and with Como standing firm, the Magpies may be better off pursuing more proven Premier League options like Mbeumo or Semenyo.

That said, Howe has shown patience in squad building, and Diao’s potential is undeniable. If Newcastle remain in the conversation and continue monitoring his progress, he could emerge as a key target in future windows. For now, though, a deal feels premature.
