Mo Salah’s New Deal Casts Long Shadow Over Chiesa’s Future at Liverpool

Salah’s Star Power Shows No Signs of Dimming

At Liverpool, greatness tends to be accompanied by turbulence. While supporters rejoice over Mohamed Salah’s decision to pen a new two-year deal—extending his Anfield stay until 2027—repercussions are already rippling beneath the surface. Salah, now the club’s highest-paid player in history on £400,000 per week, remains the cornerstone of Liverpool’s attacking identity. His commitment, at face value, is cause for celebration. Behind the curtain, however, it appears it could come at a cost.

Chiesa’s Risky Gamble and Liverpool’s Long Game

Brought in from Juventus in a £12.5m move last summer, Chiesa’s signing had an unmistakable air of contingency planning. The Italian winger, capped 51 times for his country, was viewed by many as a plausible heir or even insurance should Salah have followed the Saudi riches calling. But football seldom runs parallel to plan.

After nursing an injury upon arrival, Chiesa’s adaptation was slow. A player whose style is built around acceleration, dynamism and directness—ironically not dissimilar to Salah himself—was never going to quietly sit in the wings. And now, with the Egyptian’s continued dominance guaranteed for another two seasons, discontent has begun to brew.

According to Calciomercato, “the news has pushed Chiesa closer to the Anfield exit door.” It’s hardly surprising. With just two goals in 12 appearances, the Italian has yet to carve out a definitive role in Arne Slot’s system, and the prospect of playing second fiddle indefinitely isn’t palatable for a player of his stature.

Interest Builds as Chiesa Considers Options

The reality for Chiesa is not a lack of talent, but one of opportunity. Calciomercato’s report suggests that suitors are already forming a queue. AC Milan appear to be leading the chase for the 27-year-old’s signature, but they are far from alone. Fenerbahce have also reportedly been “closely monitoring his situation,” and whispers of Premier League clubs circling have surfaced too.

A return to Serie A might offer comfort, a familiar rhythm, and more importantly, a central role. But a move to Turkey—or a Premier League rival—would signify ambition, if not defiance.

Chiesa’s limited output for Liverpool may have dulled his shine temporarily, but those who watched him blaze through Euro 2020 know his worth. His game thrives on confidence and space—neither of which have been in generous supply under Salah’s shadow.

Our View – Anfield Index

Chiesa isn’t just some squad filler. At Juventus and for Italy, he’s shown he can be a match-winner. Yes, he’s been unlucky with injuries and hasn’t hit his stride yet, but has he really been given a run of games to show us what he’s about? Probably not.

Selling him now might fetch a decent fee, but it would leave questions of what if? If given more time could Chiesa add something to the squad? Especially when Luis Diaz and Cody Gakpo have had some dry spells, especially in 2025.

Let Salah have his well-earned payday, but let’s not do it at the cost of progress. Chiesa could be useful if given the chance.
