Massimiliano Allegri is well aware that Milan’s choice of a new sporting director will play a key role in determining who they appoint as their next coach, but he has privately confided to those close to him that he hopes the final decision will ultimately go his way.

The former Juventus and Rossoneri manager has been in the frame for months, as the Diavolo work to reshape their board structure before naming a successor to Sergio Conceiçao, who is expected to leave after just six months in charge.

While Allegri has been among the leading names linked with the job, other candidates reportedly under consideration include Antonio Conte, Vincenzo Italiano, and Roberto De Zerbi.

Allegri studying Milan closely while waiting for the call

The 57-year-old, out of work since parting ways with Juventus at the end of last season, is also being monitored by other clubs — including Roma — but according to Calciomercato.com, he has told those closest to him that the idea of returning to San Siro excites him.

Determined not to be caught unprepared, Allegri has reportedly watched every Milan match in recent months — a way to assess the squad he could inherit and start thinking about possible solutions to implement if given the job.
