FC Barcelona have completed several renewal operations in the last one and a half months, including those of important players like Ronald Araujo, Pedri, Gavi, and Pau Cubarsi.
But work on this front is still not complete for the Blaugranes, as Deco is now looking to embark on a second round of renewals, and players like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Jules Kounde are expected to negotiate their renewals in the coming weeks.
However, one important player whose renewal process remains stuck is the midfielder Frenkie de Jong. The Dutchman was offered a new contract about a year ago, to which he did not even respond, and which has been rescinded by the Blaugranes since.
Frenkie’s agent, Ali Dursun, even met Deco some days ago in Barcelona, and it looked like the two parties will negotiate a new contract. However, no progress was made in that meeting.
For now, MARCA reports that both sides have decided that this is not the right time to negotiate his renewal, and thus, talks will resume at the end of the season or only after there is more certainty about the midfielder at a sporting level.
As things stand, the Dutchman is ready for everything. He ideally wants to continue at the Blaugrana club, but has had to face some very difficult moments during his time at Barcelona, including whistles from fans, and being pushed to leave as the Catalans wanted to get rid of his high salary.
Meanwhile, his importance in the team has also varied considerably this season. He remained a fringe player for several months after his recovery from a serious injury, and has regained an important place in the team only in the last few weeks, as he looks to have overtaken Marc Casado in Flick’s selection preferences.
But his contract is expiring in 2026, and he can have several offers to join another big side as a free agent, getting a huge signing bonus in the process. This is a possibility that Barcelona want to avoid, and thus, they will put him on the market if there is no agreement for a renewal.
