Tijjani Reijnders has been a key player for AC Milan since joining last summer, and he often displays leadership qualities, and his latest words to the press display this further.

It has not been easy for the Dutchman in his first year at Milan, yet the midfielder has not complained about his position once. Instead, he has taken each game in his stride, aiming to cause an impact wherever he is trusted on the pitch.

Stefano Pioli played him as a midfielder in every sense, and seeing him rotate between an attacking and defensive midfielder was not uncommon. Under Paulo Fonseca he has found continuity, though, playing mainly as a deeper-lying playmaker, but there have been calls to play him in a more advanced role.

Partnered with Youssouf Fofana, the Dutchman is given lesser defensive duties and is given the freedom to roam from his position with fewer worries about his other responsibilities, and it is close to ticking for the former AZ Alkmaar player.

Yesterday, Reijnders discussed the importance of the next three weeks for the Rossoneri, whilst addressing the coach’s tactical tweaks.

A key moment for Milan’s season awaits with seven games in 21 days. Where do you start from?

“The last few games have certainly not been the best in terms of results, but the important thing is to stay united as a group and be compact. We have the quality to change the trajectory of this season.

“We want to win, we know that the next games are important. I have a lot of faith in this group, we can do better than we did in the last few games.”

Do Milan have what is needed to fight for the Scudetto?

“Yes. There have been tactical changes, we are improving game after game. The important point is to understand how the coach wants to play, we are understanding it slowly and we are developing our game. We have a great group, with great quality, now it is up to us to show it with victories.”
