Polish referee Szymon Marciniak has spoken for the first time following his controversial officiating during the Champions League semi-final second leg between Inter Milan and FC Barcelona.

Marciniak was already a focus of attention before the match, and his decisions during the game only intensified scrutiny.

He made several calls which Barcelona complained were controversial and favoured Inter, who played at home in the Giuseppe Meazza, and these were viewed as decisive in the outcome of the tie.

Speaking to Al Qahera (h/t Mundo Deportivo), Marciniak has now reacted to the backlash.

When asked about the comments made by Hansi Flick and several Barcelona players after the match, Marciniak stated:

“Their comments are ridiculous. What can I say about these stupid comments? I did not hurt anyone.”

On the possibility of Barcelona filing a complaint against him with UEFA – an idea raised by Pedri, who called for the organisation to take action – Marciniak laughed and said:

“I am ready for anything.”

Addressing the criticism surrounding Inter Milan’s third goal, which Barça believed should have been disallowed for a potential foul on Gerard Martin in the buildup, he concluded:

“Inter’s third goal was definitely valid.”

While there is definitely a bitter taste left behind, Barcelona must now let it go and focus on what lies ahead, especially with the all-important El Clasico against Real Madrid coming up on Sunday.

A victory against their bitter rivals at home will take Barça, who are already four points clear of Carlo Ancelotti’s men, one step closer to winning the La Liga title.
