A lot has been said about FIFA’s decision to host the first ever Club World Cup in the United States of America, first for the relatively empty stadiums and second the condition of pitches and lack of quality training camps for teams.

A third reason to criticise the selection of venue is the whether which has been highly unpredictable in recent weeks. After all, several games have had to be postponed by a couple of hours owing to poor weather.

As relayed by MARCA, Real Madrid’s next game against RB Salzburg is under threat of facing a similar fate as the forecast heading up to the game is anything but favourable.

Risk of postponement

The Spanish outlet relays that the temperature in Philadelphia on Thursday afternoon clocked as high as 40 degrees and that the situation is expected to worsen later today. In fact, the forecast predicts a high chance of a rainstorm with thunder.

The rule in the United States over the conduct of games is clear – if lightning strikes or there are signs of thunder shocks within a radius of 8 miles (about 13 km) of the stadium, the game is automatically suspended.

Suspension of a game implies the stands being emptied, players being sent back to the dressing room, and the start of a countdown for clearance. Only after 30 minutes of not seeing lightning or hearing thunder will proceedings continue.

Both Real Madrid and Salzburg have been informed of the situation and the possible delay in the game.

The only positive is that no game in the event has been delayed by more than a few hours and that a complete postponement is thus unlikely.

Nevertheless, the weather on Thursday night is expected to play a big part in the result that unfolds later tonight. Real Madrid must look to rise above the adversity and play a brand of football that is not impacted by external factors.
