As Real Madrid pursue another trophy in the Club World Cup, attention behind the scenes is turning towards their summer transfer business. The Athletic reports that the club are prepared to let Rodrygo leave, with new head coach Xabi Alonso backing the decision if a suitable offer arrives. Arsenal have held preliminary talks with the Brazilian forward’s representatives, while other Premier League clubs are also monitoring the situation.
Rodrygo, 24, has been a key part of Madrid’s frontline since arriving in 2019. But with Endrick on his way, Arda Guler showing versatility, and Brahim Diaz close to a contract extension, there is a feeling within the club that they can afford to move on without him.
Madrid’s stance is firm. They are “open to offers” for Rodrygo, but will not actively push him out. It is a stance that suggests a strategic reshaping of the squad rather than a hasty overhaul.

Madrid are clearly preparing for the future. The signing of Franco Mastantuono from River Plate for over €60million highlights their focus on developing young talent. The 17-year-old Argentine, who turns 18 in August, is considered a flexible attacker capable of becoming both a goalscorer and a playmaker. He is expected to report to Valdebebas on 14 August.
With Mastantuono joining and Diaz staying, the need to sign a direct replacement for Rodrygo appears unnecessary. Arda Guler, who has operated in midfield during Alonso’s early tenure, also offers creative cover in attacking areas.
The only active position Madrid are looking to reinforce is left-back. Benfica’s Alvaro Carreras is their top target according to The Athletic, even though Fran Garcia has impressed during the Club World Cup in the United States. Garcia’s comments reflected his desire to stay: “I try to be calm, dedicate myself to working for myself, for the team, give my best every day that I put on this shirt and hopefully I can continue to do so for much longer because I feel good.”

With Ferland Mendy still recovering from injury and having agreed a contract extension not yet made official, the club have important decisions to make in the full-back department.
Gonzalo Garcia’s breakout campaign in the Club World Cup has prompted speculation over Endrick’s future, but those close to the 17-year-old insist he is going nowhere this summer. Garcia, 21, has scored four and assisted once in five games, impressing with his finishing and movement.
Centre-back Jacobo Ramon is expected to leave, with Italy’s Como interested in the 20-year-old. And Luka Modric’s departure is confirmed, bringing an end to his glittering 17-year spell at the Bernabeu. Milan manager Massimiliano Allegri said: “We’re waiting for him to join up with us, he’ll be here in August. He’s an important and extraordinary player.”
Academy defender Youssef Enriquez, known as Yusi, will also exit, joining Alaves in a deal worth €3million that includes a 50 per cent sell-on clause and buy-back rights.
From a Real Madrid fan’s perspective, the decisions being made reflect a confidence in the club’s recruitment model, but also carry risks. Rodrygo may not have been consistently elite, but his Champions League pedigree and ability to perform in big games give him value beyond raw stats. Letting him leave without a nailed-on replacement could backfire if injuries hit or youngsters don’t adapt quickly.
Franco Mastantuono sounds exciting, and €60million is a huge statement. But Madridistas have seen this before. Not every wonderkid lives up to billing, especially under the weight of expectations at the Bernabeu. The left-back situation also feels precarious. Fran Garcia is improving, but relying solely on him while Mendy recovers and Carreras remains a target could prove short-sighted.
Gonzalo Garcia’s rise is thrilling, but the idea of Endrick being questioned before even playing a competitive minute for Madrid feels premature. As for Modric, his departure is painful. No matter who arrives, that leadership and class cannot be replaced overnight.
In summary, fans will back the youth movement, but they will also demand results. Selling Rodrygo, banking on teenagers, and reshuffling the back line leaves little margin for error in what remains a win-now club.
