Real Madrid file formal complaint following refereeing controversy vs Espanyol | OneFootball

Real Madrid were once again at the receiving end of a refereeing scandal, in their most recent game against Espanyol.

Although the referees were not directly involved in altering the outcome of any goals, there was a big controversy surrounding a tackle made by Espanyol’s Carlos Romero at Kylian Mbappe.

Around the hour mark, Romero made a lunging challenge on Mbappe who was running at fool speed. The way the challenge was made was completely cynical and could have easily ended badly for the Real Madrid attacker.

The referees, though, did not take any harsh action against Romero, who simply received a yellow card for his transgressions.

This left the Real Madrid camp extremely furious, especially at a time when Carlo Ancelotti and co were screaming for a red card.

Real Madrid launch formal complaint

In the wake of the incident, Real Madrid have now lodged a formal complaint to the RFEF and the CSD against referee Muniz Ruiz and the VAR referee Iglesias Villanueva, as confirmed by the club.

In a four page letter, Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has demanded the audio recording of the match.

Moreover, Los Blancos have demanded a complete reform of the refereeing system in Spain, which has become the subject of controversy way too many times now.

In the letter, Real Madrid argue that Carlos Romero should have been sent off around the hour mark, which in turn, could have greatly impacted the final outcome.

The club have also flagged the decisions made by the referee and the VAR referee.

“Due to the scandalous conduct of the referee and the VAR. The events that occurred in that match have exceeded any margin of human error or referee interpretation,” read an excerpt from a four-page long letter.
