Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger finally returned to the starting lineup in the 3-0 win against RB Salzburg, marking his first start since April.

The experienced German centre-back was back on the pitch after nearly two months away, following surgery a month and a half ago.

However, as reported by AS, his comeback quickly turned into a worrying moment for Madrid and manager Xabi Alonso when Rudiger appeared to pick up a muscle problem during a solo sprint down the field.

What happened to Rudiger?

As soon as the attacking run ended, Rudiger felt discomfort and dropped to the ground at Lincoln Financial Field. His teammates rushed to help him stretch while the medical staff provided immediate treatment.

Although he tried to continue, it became clear he couldn’t carry on, and he was replaced minutes later by young defender Jacobo Ramon.

So far, the club has not released an official update on Rudiger’s condition, leaving fans and the coaching staff anxious ahead of the crucial round of 16 clash against Juventus next week.

Alonso plays down seriousness

After the match, Xabi Alonso tried to calm fears about Rudiger’s health. “He just had cramps, nothing serious,” Alonso said. “He’s comfortable playing with three centre-backs, like he did at Chelsea. He gives us strength and helps us stay flexible.”

Still, the scare has raised concerns within the squad, as Real Madrid can’t afford to lose a key player at such an important stage of the tournament.

Rudiger’s performance also showed he might need more time to regain full match fitness, with some moments against Salzburg revealing he is not yet at 100%.

Should Rudiger not recover in time, there’s a chance Asencio could return to the starting lineup, despite recent criticism after his red card against Pachuca and two major mistakes.

For now, Madrid will monitor Rudiger closely, hoping he can bounce back and be ready for next Tuesday’s decisive match against Juventus, where his experience could prove crucial for Los Blancos.
