With Xabi Alonso’s appointment as their new manager set to be made official imminently, Real Madrid are busy at work to finalise key signings for the manager before the FIFA Club World Cup next month.

Dean Huijsen and Trent Alexander-Arnold are expected to arrive in the next few weeks and the focus has now shifted to the signing of a new left-back.

Ferland Mendy’s fitness problems are a major concern for Real Madrid while Fran Garcia has also failed to convince as a starter, prompting the club to look for upgrades.

Alvaro Carreras of SL Benfica, to that end, has emerged as a priority target for Los Blancos. However, they are also keeping an eye on alternatives for the position.

Bayer Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo an option

As such, Melchor Ruiz reports that Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo is one of the top options on Real Madrid’s agenda.

The 29-year-old former Barcelona academy man has thrived at Leverkusen under Alonso since joining the German outfit in 2023.

Grimaldo was one of the main driving forces behind their successful campaign in 2023/24, as he contributed 12 goals and 20 assists from 51 games in all competitions.

The Spaniard has continued in the same vein of form this season, scoring four and assisting 13 goals in 47 matches under Alonso.

As such, Grimaldo, who has a contract with Bayer Leverkusen until 2027, has been identified as one of the options to strengthen the left-back position at Real Madrid in the summer.

Milos Kerkez of AFC Bournemouth is another alternative that the Merengues are considering for the position.

It remains to be seen who Real Madrid end up signing but a new left-back appears certaint o arrive at the Santiago Bernabeu in the coming weeks.
