When Hansi Flick arrived at Barcelona, he wasted no time in leaving his mark.

His philosophy was clear from the first game was that the team would push high up the pitch, squeeze opponents, and rely on a perfectly drilled defensive line to catch forwards offside.

For months, it looked like the perfect plan. The defenders moved in sync, the coordination was flawless, and the opposition found themselves repeatedly running into dead ends.

The system became one of Barcelona’s strongest weapons last season. We can still recall how Real Madrid were frustrated at the Santiago Bernabeu, being flagged offside almost 10 times before half-time.

Mallorca also fell victim at Son Moix, where their attackers were caught offside nearly 15 times in one game. It was the kind of dominance that gave the team control even without the ball.

This season, though, things have taken a turn. Barcelona have played three La Liga matches so far and have already conceded three goals.

The trap that once kept rivals powerless now looks easier to break, and opposing managers have clearly studied Flick’s approach over the summer.

The most recent warning came in Vallecas, where Rayo Vallecano exposed the flaws of the high line.

Their manager, Inigo Perez, deserves credit for setting up a plan that unsettled Barcelona throughout the match.

Barça’s overall performance didn’t help as they looked heavy-legged and careless in possession, especially after the break.

But it was Rayo’s tactical bravery that made the difference. Instead of constantly trying to run in behind the defence, they used wide players to attack at angles and dragged Barcelona’s defenders out of position.

One player in particular, Isi Palazon, executed this idea brilliantly. He often stood in what looked like an obvious offside position, almost baiting the defenders.

But he was never meant to receive the first ball. The wide man made the initial run, slipped in behind legally, and then quickly connected with Isi, who had space to attack.

By the time Barcelona’s centre-backs reacted, Isi was already in a dangerous position.

It was a clever approach, and it nearly paid off. If not for Joan Garcia’s saves, Barcelona could have been punished more severely.

Life after Inigo Martinez

A big reason why this tactic is no longer bulletproof is the loss of Inigo Martinez. Last season, his understanding of the game was vital for Flick’s defensive plan.

Together with young Pau Cubarsi, he gave the backline the stability it needed to hold such a risky shape. Martinez’s anticipation, communication, and calm presence made it look easy.

Now, with Martinez gone to Al Nassr, Barcelona are struggling to replace that influence. The younger defenders are talented, but they lack the experience to read situations the way Martinez did.

That split-second decision-making is exactly what makes or breaks a high line.

If Barcelona are to continue with this strategy, Flick must find a solution quickly. Either another defender steps up to fill that role, or the coach tweaks his system to make it less predictable.

What worked last season is already being studied and countered by rivals, and unless changes are made, more teams will find ways to break through.
