Ranieri before kick-off between Porto-Roma: “We’re here to play our game” | OneFootball

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Roma manager Claudio Ranieri discussed his team’s approach for tonight’s first leg in their Europa League playoff tie versus Porto.

The veteran technician expressed confidence heading into the match while acknowledging the resilience of Porto—admitting the Giallorossi will aim to impose their style in a crucial European fixture.

“We feel good, the team is in great shape,” he told Sky Sport.

“We know we’re facing a strong opponent that plays through the middle, has excellent ball handlers, and looks to attack vertically—all while being spurred on by their fans.”

He added, “Let’s not forget Porto drew 3-3 with Manchester United after being 2-0 down—they never give up. We know this, but we’re here to play our game.”

“If they prove to be better, we’ll congratulate them, but we are here to take the initiative.”

Ranieri also shared some insight on his tactical decisions, including the decision to leave Mats Hummels and Leandro Paredes on the bench.

“They (Porto) have a physical and quick striker. Hummels isn’t at the level he was when I first arrived—he needs more training because playing so frequently has taken a toll. We need to get him back to full fitness.”

“As for Paredes, we play again on Sunday, and Cristante is suspended for the Parma match. It made sense to start one today and the other on Sunday.”

Finally, Ranieri discussed his embrace with Porto executive Andoni Zubizarreta.

“He was one of my players, and I was his last coach—he was ready to retire back then,” Ranieri joked.

“Now he’s become an excellent sporting director.”
