Spanish outlet La Marca has today reported that Davide Ancelotti has formally withdrawn from the Rangers managerial race and is now expected to join Italian side Como. The young Italian had been heavily linked with the Ibrox job in recent weeks, particularly after Tony Pulis publicly endorsed him and admitted to having observed him closely during a coaching stint in Madrid. However it now appears that Ancelotti junior has opted to return to his homeland and take his first senior job in management with the newly promoted Serie A club.

This news will come as a disappointment to many Rangers supporters who saw Ancelotti as an exciting and modern option. His coaching credentials were not in doubt given his experience alongside his father Carlo at top clubs like Real Madrid Paris Saint Germain and Bayern Munich. But as Ibrox Noise recently pointed out there was always uncertainty over whether Davide would be willing to leave the glamour of Madrid to take on the intense pressure at Ibrox.

With Ancelotti now ruled out the focus returns to the leading contender Russell Martin whose name continues to divide opinion among the Rangers support. Despite reports from various fan outlets rejecting the story Fabrizio Romano has already stated that Martin is close to being confirmed and this latest development strengthens that likelihood even further. If the board was seriously hoping to land a higher calibre foreign coach then Ancelotti’s rejection signals a major blow.

The choice now seems to boil down to either proceeding with Martin who is available and willing or trying to source another name entirely which may delay the process even more. Pre season starts in just a few weeks and the longer the club waits the more difficult it becomes to properly prepare for the new campaign.

For now all eyes are on Ibrox and the boardroom. Rangers fans will not take this lightly and another misstep in the appointment process could cause further unrest. La Marca’s report may have closed the door on one highly promising candidate but it has simultaneously reopened the pressure cooker for the Rangers hierarchy as they edge closer to a deeply unpopular decision according to this update.
